Miniature magnetic rod interfacial stress rheometer for general-purpose microscopes

Despite the great demand for characterization of interfacial rheology in academic and industrial research, study is still scarce compared to its counterpart bulk rheometry limited only specialized laboratories. One biggest hurdles impeding broad application delicate design high cost rheometers. Here, we propose a new miniature magnetic rod stress rheometer (mini-ISR), which uses pair small permanent magnets as trap single coil perturbation. The simple our ISR substantially reduces dimension, allowing us directly couple conventional commercial optical microscope. Such unprecedented adaptability makes highly portable cost-effective. Moreover, use microscope improves imaging quality lowers difficulty synchronized rheometry. We show calibration mini-ISR demonstrate functionality by measuring microscopic dynamics particle monolayers at water-oil interface. Our can be used any laboratories that have access microscopes wide range studies.
